Cord Blood Saves lives
Cord blood is an accepted source of blood stem cells for patients undergoing a blood transplant. As such, they are used in treating more than 80 blood cancers, inherited genetic diseases, bone marrow failure, and immune diseases.
In other areas, cord blood therapies are being studied for nerve, heart, bone and metabolism diseases, especially in the rapidly advancing field of regenerative medicine. The value of cord blood therapies for these diseases is being determined through ongoing studies.
MonoTx™ is working on several regenerative medicines applications utilizing cord blood.
What is Cord Blood?
When a baby is delivered, and the umbilical cord is cut, the blood remaining in the umbilical cord and the placenta is known as cord blood. It is normally disposed of as medical waste.
Why should I donate my baby’s cord blood?
In Hong Kong, over 90% of cord blood is treated as a clinical waste. In fact, cord blood has a high potential for use in cell therapy. Over the past 30 years cord blood has been found to be safe and effective in treating over 80 diseases. Cells found in Cord blood also have the potential to help Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke, Hypoxia Ischemia Anemia and Age-related Macular Degeneration.
As Expecting Parents, You Can…
Cord blood is collected from the umbilical cord and placenta (often called “afterbirth”) after the baby is delivered and the cord has been cut. No blood is taken directly from your baby. The collection procedure does not interfere in any way with labor or the baby’s delivery, and poses no risk to the mother or baby.
MonoTx™ offers expecting parents an opportunity to donate your child cord blood if you live in Hong Kong.
Risk and Benefit of Cord Blood Donation?
Following the delivery of your baby, the cord blood is collected from the umbilical cord and placenta. No health risk is associated with cord blood collection.
You will not benefit financially by taking part in the donation; however, in the unlikely event that your baby or an immediate family member needs the donated cells for treatment, following the provision of a valid medical order, we will release the banked cells to you for free of charge if the donated cells have been successfully banked and are still available in our bank*.
Whether you participate or not, your medical care will not be affected since this program is voluntary.
Donor Eligibility Assessment
A donor (mother) must be older than 18 years old and be screened for the following
- There must be enough cord blood collected, and a high enough stem cell count to facilitate a transplant
- The mother’s medical history must meet the eligibility guidelines
- The cord blood unit and the mother’s blood sample must show no signs of infection or other medical concerns
